Our e ldest is now our chauffeur has her permit. It’s a weird experience to be driven around by her. I made her drive me on Saturday night to return a redbox. Gotta get them night driving hours somehow.

that should be fun.... you should have them watch a bunch of those ‘stupid driver’ compilation videos

Thanks! The first three weeks are in the classroom. Then he does his initial behind-the-wheel with the driving school. After that, we have to do a prescribed number of hours driving with him before he gets his license. TX has a graduated licensing program, too. It’s a lot to keep track of.

Not a bad idea.

TX has a graduated licensing program, and he has to perform a certain number of hours with us, some of which has to be at night. It’s a lot to keep track of.

When I got my license in GA when I was 16, I did it without taking a drivers education class. GA has since changed the law, but that law did not exist in 2006. When I went to get my license in Texas in late 2013, they almost wouldn’t give me a license because I had never taken a drivers education class. This was after I had been legally driving by myself for 7 years.

I got my license in 1982, so I have absolutely no frame of reference for how it’s done now. We took a few classes in high school, my parents taught me to drive, and my driving test was one lap around the ring road at the mall with a state trooper. Done and dusted.

I have several shots of my son at this age behind the wheel of my old Passat (but the shots were taken just 3-4 years ago...)
That looks like a ‘99 or ‘00

Louisiana has the same graduated licensing program. With all the work at my mom’s place last year, my daughter had a lot of opportunity to get driving hours. It was 9.5 hours one-way to get to my mom’s house. My daughter also got experience driving the truck (five on the floor, no power steering), driving the Explorer, driving the Outback, driving at night, and pulling a trailer. The worst stretch was a two-hour stint at night, pulling a trailer, with a couple of rain showers thrown in for good measure.
You might consider some kind of family trip or a guy’s outing where he can spend many hours behind the wheel.

My parents also taught me how to drive, that’s it. No classes or anything. My driving test was a little longer than that, and I’m pretty sure I passed because I had AC. I broke a few laws during my test, mainly turning cutting across lanes while turning. I was also speeding at some point and I didn’t parallel park. To this day I’m surprised I passed first time around.

No driver’s ed for me either (in NY circa 1998). Did have to to take a ( 5-hour ?) safety class, entirely in a classroom, where you just watched some stupid safety videos. I’m pretty sure mine only lasted about half the required time, but I got my certificate for the DMV, so it was on to the road test.

I didn’t even had to take something like that. Basically my parents just had to say I drove the minimum required amount, which I’m sure I did because every time I went somewhere with my mom I drove. We didn’t even have a log book or anything.

I remember being the family chauffeur when I got my learner’s permit. We had a bunch of hours we had to do ahead of time, and I remember a bunch of my friends bitching about it. I had WAY more than required by the time I turned 16. I was pissed that the DMV was closed on my 16th birthday (it was a Monday), so I had to wait until the next day to get my license.
Illinois now has graduated licensing, but didn’t at the time. I was talking to a local police officer about it a few years ago. He was giving my a ride to the dealership, because the dealership’s porter who was taking me back to get my truck after some service (who was the officer’s son), had backed into one of our custodian’s car after picking me up. The officer said as good as it is that one driver can’t have a ton of friends in the car, what we’ve ended up with is three cars, with two kids a piece in each of them, racing each other ... and often crashing into each other.

Ahhh, good old VW parts bin interiors. I still DD a late 2001 wagon. Both of my kids came home from the hospital in it, so it’s got some sentimentality...

I really miss that car. I had a chance to pick up a one-driver 2002 Jetta from an extended family member. Over 100k miles, $1500. I missed out, though. Would have made a good family beater, and I could have taught my son to drive stick.

Get him a Kia Optima. It will protecc if he is attacc ...
Plus, there should be plenty of cheapish 2011-2013 models because they lose value almost as much as Italian cars. I just found out mine is a definite total loss. Hooray!
